Valley College Students Excited Over Newly-Revitalized Facilities

Several Renovation and Modernization Projects Completed

Walking through Los Angeles Valley College's (LAVC) Foreign Language, Behavioral Sciences, Business Journalism and Campus Center buildings, it's easy to see that Valley College's revitalization is well underway. With more than $286 million in new construction and upgrades either in progress or completed, students are enjoying newly-renovated and modernized classrooms equipped with new furniture, freshly-painted walls, ceiling-mounted projectors and internet access.

The College's Monarch Stadium, which was built in the 1950s, was also recently renovated and is now equipped with a sprinturf football and soccer field and the only 10-lane Mondo Track in California.

"For more than half a century, Valley College has provided our community with the skills, training and education they need to succeed," said Dr. Tyree Wieder, president, LAVC. "Our College’s newly-renovated, state-of-the-art facilities will better prepare our students as they join our region’s workforce and will help guarantee that they are ready for their future careers."

Construction is underway on the College's new Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™)-certified building, the Allied Health and Science Center. LEED™ is a certification program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and is the nationally-accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. The new three-story, 98,000 sq. ft. building will house the College’s Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Biology, Chemistry/Physics and Earth Science/Anthropology departments. The center is scheduled for completion in June 2008 and will officially open this fall.

Other ongoing projects include a $1.9 million facelift of the Art and Music Buildings and a $13 million renovation to both the north and south Gymnasiums, which will include a new disabled-student gym in the South Gym and the addition of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

West Los Angeles College to Provide Better Campus Services with New Building

The project is part of the College's $178 million Bond Construction Program

Construction activity has begun for West Los Angeles College's new Student Services Building and General Classroom project.

The new $49 million LEED™-certified project is comprised of two new structures: a 46,000 sq. ft. General Classroom Building, which will house the College's Child Development, Language Arts and Behavioral Science departments, as well as a 42,000 sq. ft. Student Services Building. Construction is scheduled to be completed for fall 2009.

LA Southwest College's New Stadium Moving Closer to Reality

The new stadium will offer student-athletes and the community the ability to enjoy their favorite sporting and special events on campus

Construction activity continues on what will be Los Angeles Southwest College's (LASC) first-ever Athletic Field House and Stadium. The new $15 million state-of-the-art stadium will house Southwest's football and track and field teams, in addition to serving as a venue for special events.

The 18,160 sq.ft. stadium is part of the Los Angeles Community College District's (LACCD) innovative Design-Build Program, which assigns the design and build-out of a project to one team, thereby saving time and money by lowering overall construction costs.

Mini Boot Camp Secures Success for Small Contractor to Win New Contract

Outreach Program troops have scored another victory through their efforts to train small contractors to successfully bid on District contracts. The team recently helped L2 Living Consultation, a minority-owned firm, win a $327,900 contract for site work at Los Angeles Mission College. The victory comes as a direct result of the District's Mini Boot Camp Program.

"We rely heavily on small contractors to meet a variety of needs of our construction program," said Larry Eisenberg, executive director, facilities planning and development for the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). “It takes a true team effort to successfully complete all the work being done by the District."

"Our small contractors are an integral part of our program," added Eisenberg. "The District provides excellent opportunities for small businesses and we will continue to foster those opportunities in the future."

The District plans to bid more than $100 million of construction projects over the next 12 months, and LACCD's Small Business Boot Camp Program is designed to help small businesses compete successfully for District work. The program provides entrepreneurs with the tools they need to improve their capacity for bidding through a comprehensive program.

"Our continued efforts to help small businesses navigate through the District's bidding process remains a top priority," said Donetta Pickett, Outreach program manager. The team is pleased that we are able to assist small contractors with winning District bids."

Upon completion, small businesses are assisted with preparing Statements of Qualification to use for marketing purposes in their pursuit of LACCD contracts.

Photo of the Month: A Lesson in Beauty...

A Pierce College student studies and enjoys the beauty and serenity of the College's newly-expanded S. Mark Taper Foundation Life Science Botanic Garden. The approximately 80,300 sq. ft. botanic garden serves as the College's outdoor living classroom for its Life Science Department and includes an array of Mediterranean plants, including Australian and South African-native shrubs. The garden also demonstrates sustainable drought-resistant plants, including many Southern Californian varieties.
